BTC 120 - Cell Culture and Cell FunctionPrerequisite: RDG 095 or appropriate score on the placement test. Corequisite: BIO 113 is highly recommended, but not required. (4 Credits) An introduction to fundamental methods used to grow animal cells in culture and associated principles of cell structure and function. Topics in this course include aseptic technique, preparation and use of various culture media, cell counting and dilution, maintenance and propagation of cell lines, origin and uses of various cell lines, contamination, cell staining techniques, and quality control. A survey of metabolism, cell structure and function, growth factors and signal transduction. Laboratory fee required. Total of 45 hours of lecture and 45 hours of lab.
