BTC 101 - Introduction to BiotechnologyPrerequisite: MAT 090 , MAT 095 , or appropriate score on the placement test; AND RDG 095 or appropriate score on the placement test. (4 Credits) This is an entry level lecture/demonstration course for students interested in the biotechnology program or who want to take a science course. Basic molecular concepts, including nucleic acids, proteins and the technology used in the creation of biotechnology products will be explored. Careers and opportunities, as well as public perception and ethical issues in biotechnology, will also be discussed. Basic laboratory applications in biotechnology will be covered such as DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digestion, cloning, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and other topics, will be explored. The student will perform laboratory research to explore the requirements necessary for a career in laboratory science. * Biological/Physical Science Approved General Education Course. Laboratory fee required. Total of 45 hours of lecture and 45 hours of lab.
