THR 114 - History of the Theatre (3 Credits) This course provides a chronological look at the history of theatre as a sociocultural institution. Historical periods such as ancient Greece, the European Middle Ages, Renaissance drama, 18th century theatre, and 20th century theatre are covered. As theatre is an extremely complex institution encompassing playwriting, texts, directing, acting, and many other areas, this course indicates some of the forces that explain the paths theatre has taken. Through text reading, class discussions and various projects, students learn the flavors of theatre in each era covered in class. Total of 45 hours of lecture.
