SOC 103 - Criminology Corequisite: RDG 095 or appropriate score on the placement test. (3 Credits) This course provides an introduction to the nature, functions, and causes of crime in society. Various criminological theories - from the Enlightenment to present - are explored in order to understand and conceptualize the socially constructed nature of crime causation, criminal conduct, crime deterrence, and law. Additionally, the course focuses on contemporary issues, trends, and social problems associated with the criminal justice system in the United States, including race and class disparities, recidivism, police-community relations, privatization of prisons, and white-collar crime. Total of 45 hours of lecture.
