SOC 104 - Sociology of Science and Technology

Prerequisite: ENG 100   or placement into ENG 101  . MAT 100  or placement into MAT 101 .
(3 Credits)
This course applies the sociological perspective to the historical and potential future advancements in science and technology.  Course readings and a major research paper or report are required.  Course exercises focus upon the social practices, norms, and values that reflect and shape American convictions about science and technology.  The course examines all the major STEM fields and explores social groups, social structures, processes and practices, as well as the cultural roles STEM workers fulfill as they exist today and what is likely to change in the future.  This examination of the sociology of STEM work also provides students the opportunity to learn more about STEM professions as these types of jobs become more prevalent in society. Students will present their paper or project at the end of the year and compete for the annual Sociology of Science and Technology award. Total of 45 hours of lecture.
